ACUPUNCTURE - CHINESE HERBS - NUTRITION - FACIAL REJUVENATION
Findings from eight years of data collected by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center show a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for each can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day.
While it can't be said that diet sodas cause weight gain, one theory for the phenomenon, called the "Mad Hatter Theory," is suggested, and it echoes what Jeffrey and Galen have been saying for years. In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Alice is offered tea, but is given none. Miffed, she helps herself to tea and bread and butter. The sweet taste in Traditional Chinese Medicine is associated with the Spleen and Stomach. Just as in the "Mad Hatter Theory," when we offer our bodies the sweet taste but no calories (fuel) are forthcoming, your body is expecting sugar and may crave more sweet taste until the need for energy is satisfied. Obesity is associated with a weak Spleen, and offering the sweet taste without food energy only weakens the Spleen further.
Are you confused by the new federal "food pyramid" recommendations? The August/September edition of Eating Well Magazine has a terrific, and clear, article on the recommendations, including an explanation of what "five servings of whole grains" really means. While the focus isn't on TCM nutritional principles, the magazine promotes a diet of good-tasting food that's good for you, and can be especially helpful if you also follow the guidelines from your friendly TCM practitioner based on your individual TCM presentation. We have subscription information at the clinic.
Research in to the efficacy of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine continues to demonstrate the benefits of this ancient medicine. A recent British study published in the journal NeuroImage, demonstrated that acupuncture was as effective as popular painkillers for treatment of chronic pain in conditions such as arthritis, and is free of harmful side-effects. Other recent studies have shown acupuncture and TCM to be effective in treating fibromyalgia, post-surgical pain and nausea, tension and migraine headaches, recurrent urinary tract infections, symptoms of congestive heart failure, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as hormone-free relief for the symptoms and discomforts of menopause such as hot flashes, mood swings and insomnia.
